
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American actor and singer whose career spanned over 40 years. A torch performer renowned for her sultry, languid contralto singing, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 between the years 1955 and 1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her recording of "Cry Me a River" which she premiered on her debut album. In addition to the recording, London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1974 in her role as nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa, California to vaudevillian parents. She began her acting career in Los Angeles as an actress. London's acting career lasted for 35 years and began in 1944 with roles in films. This included roles as the lead female in numerous westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-50s she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional career. Her last studio album was released in 1969. Her success continued as the female star role in the role of Dixie McCall on the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) in which she co-starred alongside Bobby Troup. The show was created by her ex-husband Jack Webb.
